Manaslu is the eighth highest mountain in the world,
which rises to 8.156 meters.
It was first called Kutang, as it was the highest mountain of this
district.
It is Peak XXX of the Indian Survey. It is located in Nepal, in the
central area of the Himalayan Range.
Manaslu is derived from the Sanskrit word Manasa, which means mind,
spirit. It is translated as "Mountain of the Spirit". The
inhabitants of nearest village Sama call it Kambung, a local God they
believe lives in the Manaslu summit.
In March 1956, after three Japanese expeditions, another Japanese one
arrived in Manaslu, this time it was leaded by the former president
of the Japanese Alpine Mr Yuki Maki, 62 years old, who was accompanied
by ten climbers. First climb to Manaslu was succeeded by two of these
mountaineers on May 9th, 1956, Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu. Three
days after, other three members of this Japanese expedition also reached
the summit. Climber Gyalzen Norbu became the first man to climb two
8000 meter mountains, as the year before he had climbed Manaslu with
the French expedition.
